Equisetin differs only in having a hydrogen atom at C-4 position of CJ-21058. It is also known to show a broad range of biological activites such as antibacterial, anti-HIV, cytotoxicity and DNA binding properties. The striking structural similarities between CJ-21058 and qeuisetin as well as their potent antibacterial properties point towards a possible correlation between antibacterial and SecA inhibitory activities of these compounds.
CJ-21058 shows antibacterial activity against gram-positive multi-drug resistant bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis(MIC=5μg/ml)?by inhibiting ATP-dependent translocation of precursor proteins across a bacterial cell membrane. But it has no activity against Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli.?
